Working with Universities and Colleges and Associations

CFAB can provide input to professional social work courses (and other related professional training courses) on a range of specialist topics in the area of intercountry social work.

  • In Febraury 2010 CFAB was asked to give a presentation at Oxford Brookes University to around 50 Social Work students highlighting internationl social work issues and how CFAB works. To view the presentation please click here

  • In March 2010 CFAB's Operations Manager gave a training session for interpreters from the Worker's Educational Association on international social work issues. The session gave trainees an insight into how CFAB works and knowledge of how to deal more confidently with international cases. 100% of trainees thought the training was excellent and commented " It was all useful for me! I only wish we could've had more time!" and "I am certainly more aware of issues around international work in situations involving children."

  • Between 2005 to 2008, CFAB staff were invited to lead a workshop at the University of East Anglia for MA students studying International Child Welfare. The workshop was a combination of a video setting out the range of CFAB work and a discussion on case studies that highlighted some of the challenges of intercountry casework.

There were interesting discussions on:

  • parental responsibility
  • how the law in the UK and in the country of origin may be different,
  • how child welfare procedures can differ from one country to another
  • the importance of considering family members overseas as potential carer for a child.

Student Placements

CFAB can provide a limited number of supervised student placements for students studying a professional social work qualification in the UK or abroad.

In past years, students from Brunel University, Hull University and Arhus University of Social Work, Denmark have undertaken placements at CFAB.

In 2010 CFAB are delighted to have five 1st year MA students from Brunel University join us for a 26 week placement from January to July. We are also delighted to welcome a Danish student from Arhus to the team.

From October 2010 three Greenwich 1st year MA students will be joining the CFAB team on 26 week placements. We are very much looking forward to working with the University.

CFAB uses a model of group practice learning sessions with the students as it carries the potential for more inter placement and inter agency learning. We believe the students will be able to learn more effectively than in one to one sessions. It will also provide a safe opportunity for students to develop reflective practice. The group will be able to break down specialism boundaries, which is crucial when undertaking international casework. In addition, the model will also accurately reflect situations the students wil frequently be working in once they are qualified.

Built into the the group learning experience will be development sessions for placement supervisors. Qualified social work staff at CFAB will learn from each other, work as a team and augment their leadership and management skills. It is based on the premise that the extent of placement supervisor’s work and involvement with students should be recognized, valued and supported more during student placements.

Those interested in a placement with us at CFAB's office and course tutors should contact info@cfab.uk.net for more details.

Testimonial from previous intern

Hi, I'm Ana, the former Events & Fundraising Intern. I worked as CFAB for eight months. I know, this is a pretty long time for an internship, but I was having a great time! I am very passionate and interested in events, and I had previous experience in this area too. I was looking to 'give back something to the world' using my professional skills, and that is why this work experience was perfect for me.
The job description is very accurate, so you definitely will be doing all that it says. Plus you will have a great space to develop your own special skills. The team is extremely open minded and knows how to play to your personal strengths and interests. In my case, I was trusted with redesigning internal forms and writing articles for the newsletter among other personal projects.
What they don't tell you in the job description is that you are going to be working alongside amazing people, who do incredible things for the charity. 2011 is going to be a busy year full of exiting events (where you will meet great people too) so I am sure you will enjoy every  moment as I did. I could not have found a better place to start my work experience in the UK, full of great colleagues (now friends), interesting challenges and unlimited possibilities!
